That's a tough one! I'd take it back to evaluating what you value and truly, what kind of life do you want to live? Think about all the ways you could do the trip and the "help out meals" as inexpensively as possible. There just might be a way to make it work. Also, being with the person/people in need in other non-spending ways might be something to investigate. Maybe there is another way to be of service without being there physically and without spending in the ways we automatically think of when we think about helping someone out.
What's really killing me is the gas prices. I have a nine year old, paid for SUV that gets around 16 or 17 mpg, which is obviously not economical in any way when my best friend lives an hour away, her radiation treatment is an hour past that, and I'm taking her two days a week. It's still cheaper than a new car, but it's really griping me that my last fill up was $62 and I am having to fill up every week now!! I decided to only go once this week, since her mom is here visiting and can take her. Hopefully family can take over some of that driving for me, because it is costing me a fortune!
